Comparison · Hinge alternative
Hinge is a good app. We're a different one, built for a different goal.

If you're going to use a national dating app, it's probably the right choice. We're not here to trash it.
Heart of Gold is doing something different. We're an Austin-first dating app, connection-based instead of swipe-based, with ten levels of mutual choice that a connection moves through over time. We don't think we're a Hinge replacement for everyone. We think we're a better fit for a specific kind of person.

Volume. Hinge has tens of millions of users worldwide and is the largest pool of "intentional" daters on a national app. Outside our strongest markets, Hinge is going to give you more options. If you want the comfort of a brand-name app with a long track record, Hinge has that.
Hinge also has a more polished onboarding flow than we do — they've had years and a Match Group budget. Their prompts are well-designed and pull better profile content than we currently do.
Local context. Heart of Gold started in Austin and has a strong local community, and you can filter by distance so your matches actually live near you, know the same restaurants, and aren't going to want to FaceTime forever from another time zone.
Connection format. Hinge is fundamentally a swipe deck with prompts attached. Our format is a slower one — you talk to a few people at a time, and each connection moves through ten levels as you both decide to keep going. There's no infinite scroll and no engagement-maximizing loop pulling you to keep swiping.
Photo verification. Our perceptual hashing checks every uploaded photo against every other account, which catches ban evaders and stolen photos in a way Hinge's selfie verification doesn't.
Pricing. Heart of Gold is free to join, while Hinge+ is a paid subscription. No paywall on our side.
